Wondering how to plan a destination wedding in New Zealand? In this guide, I’m walking you through everything you need to know, from picking the perfect location to sorting out the legalities, to finding the best local vendors and making the most of your time in this beautiful country.
Why New Zealand Weddings Are One-Of-A-Kind
The beauty of this country is that it has an incredibly diverse landscape and unique venues to suit every type of celebration.
Dreaming of a bigger event? You have stunning vineyards, luxurious lodges, and outdoor spaces with unbeatable views. Looking for a more intimate wedding experience? You have your choice of charming chapels or quiet spaces nestled in nature.
When it comes to elopements, New Zealand has a lot to offer for adventurous couples. We have jaw-dropping national parks, untamed beaches, and spectacular mountains, making this a playground for couples who want to steer away from tradition and experience the adventure of a lifetime.
One of my favourite things about New Zealand is that it’s not only an extraordinary place to get married, but it’s also the perfect destination to seamlessly transition from your wedding into your honeymoon.
There are so many activities and experiences here that you and your partner can dive straight into after your wedding without missing a beat. We have scenic cruises on Lake Wakatipu in Queenstown, or you can explore the magical Hobbiton Movie Set, or even wander through the glowworm caves in Rotorua on a blackwater rafting tour.

The Best Time Of Year To Get Married In New Zealand
Every season in New Zealand offers something special – my favourite time of year being autumn (April/May) and spring (September/October). But honestly, if you’re wondering when to get married in New Zealand, there’s really no wrong time to tie the knot.
The time of year you choose will affect everything from venue availability to the overall atmosphere of your day. Also keep in mind that New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable in general so be prepared for any weather at any time of year! Now, let’s break it down.
Peak Wedding Season: Summer & Early Autumn (December – March)
Summer in New Zealand is seriously magical. We have long, sun-drenched days, warm temperatures, and golden sunsets, making this the most popular wedding season.

If you’re dreaming of a beachside ceremony or an outdoor celebration, summer is your best bet. Just be aware that with peak season comes high demand. Both venues and vendors tend to book out quickly during this time, so you’ll want to plan well in advance.
Early autumn (March to April) is another fabulous time to get married in New Zealand. The weather is still warm here, but the summer crowds start to thin out, and you get the added bonus of gorgeous autumn foliage.

Spring & Late Autumn: (September – November & April-May )
Spring in New Zealand is always bursting with life! We have lush green landscapes, cherry blossoms, and longer daylight hours during this time, so if you love the idea of fresh, vibrant scenery, this is a perfect time to get married.

Late autumn, especially in regions like the South Island, offers deep, rich colours with golden leaves and soft light that make for unreal photo opportunities. It’s also a quieter time, meaning you’ll have more flexibility with venue bookings and less competition for top vendors.
Scenic Beauty & Photo Opportunities Year-Round
No matter the season, New Zealand delivers some incredible wedding backdrops. I’m talking lakeside ceremonies with still waters reflecting the mountains, clifftops with waves crashing below, and forest settings covered in golden-hour light. The choices are endless and it’s all about the vibe you want for your day.
And speaking of golden hour — New Zealand’s sunsets are also legendary year-round. As a photographer, I can never get enough of the soft, warm glow stretching over the landscapes which creates a really romantic backdrop.
So, when’s the best time to get married in New Zealand? That all depends on the aesthetic you’re after, your honeymoon plans, and how soon you want to tie the knot!

The Best Wedding Venues In New Zealand For Destination Weddings
New Zealand has no shortage of breathtaking wedding venues, but if you’re after a spot that not only delivers on scenery but can also accommodate guests, I’ve got some stellar recommendations.
For intimate elopements, Mataia Homestead is really charming. It’s romantic, secluded, and packed with character. Surrounded by gorgeous views and offering an array of comforts and amenities, this is definitely a venue for the books.

Couldrey House is another venue with Victorian-era vibes in a gorgeous historic setting. This is perfect for couples wanting to add a touch of old-world nostalgia to their day.

Finding the Right Vendors
For larger weddings, hiring a local wedding planner can make a huge difference in ensuring everything runs smoothly. As a local wedding photographer, I know some incredible planners and would be more than happy to recommend one that suits your wedding style and vision.
Beyond planning, New Zealand is home to countless talented wedding suppliers, including florists, musicians, décor and lighting experts, and more. If you need recommendations, just ask!
I’ve worked with some of the best and would love to connect you with the right people to bring your dream wedding to life.
Tips For Organising A New Zealand Destination Wedding From Abroad
Planning a wedding from halfway across the world might sound like a challenge, but with the right approach (and the right people on your team), it can be easier than you think. I’ve got a few tips to make the process as seamless as possible.
1. Hire Local
First things first — work with local professionals who know the ins and outs of New Zealand’s wedding scene. Working with local vendors (like, ahem, me, a local photographer) can make things like navigating the best locations and understanding the unpredictable weather so much easier.
A local wedding planner is also worth considering, especially for larger celebrations, as they’ll take care of logistics while you focus on the fun stuff.
2. Consider the Lighting
Another key thing to note is how daylight works here, especially if you’re planning an outdoor ceremony. In the South Island, the sun dips behind the mountains well before the official sunset time, though it stays light until nearly 10 pm in summer.
This means golden hour might come earlier than you expect, which is important for planning your timeline (and getting those dreamy sunset photos!). The North Island, on the other hand, has more open horizons, giving you gorgeous sunrises and sunsets over the water, especially in places like Bethells Beach, just a short drive from central Auckland.
And speaking of landscapes, the contrast between the North and South Islands is something to consider when choosing your location.
The North Island is lush, green, and dotted with sensational beaches, making it an ideal location for coastal ceremonies. The South Island is more untamed with rugged mountains, vast open spaces, and an arid, dramatic beauty.
3. Start Early
When planning a New Zealand wedding from abroad, it’s always wise to begin as early as possible. I usually suggest planning at least a year ahead, especially if you’re hoping for a larger wedding that will require travel for guests, multiple vendors, catering, etc.
Plus, you need to consider the legalities of getting married in New Zealand, which brings us to our next topic.
Legal Requirements For Getting Married IN New Zealand
If you’re planning a destination wedding or elopement in New Zealand, you’ll need to sort out a few legalities first. But don’t worry, it’s a fairly straightforward process. Here’s what you need to know to legally tie the knot in New Zealand:
- Minimum Age: Both people need to be at least 18 years old or older.
- Relationship Criteria: The marriage must be between two people who are not closely related to each other.
- Notice of Intended Marriage: You’ll need to complete a form declaring your intention to marry at least three days before your wedding.
- Marriage Licence: You’ll need a marriage license, which can be obtained either online or through a paper application. The cost is $150, and it should be submitted at least three working days before the ceremony.
- Witnesses: You’ll need to have two people present as witnesses during the ceremony.
- Officiant: You’ll need a registered marriage celebrant or minister of religion who can officiate your ceremony legally.
- Permits: If you plan to marry on a beach, National Park, or public park, you may need to obtain a permit from the local council. For certain national park locations, such as Milford Sound or Mt. Cook National Park, you will need to secure a permit from the Department of Conservation (DOC).
It’s essential to apply for this permit well in advance, as processing can take up to eight weeks. Just note that while the permit grants you priority use of the area, it does not grant exclusive access to the space.
